Westside alumni have carried what they learned through the program into their professional careers, communities, and everyday lives. Here's what families, players, and alumni have to say.
Westside United didn't just teach my son basketball - it helped shape who he's becoming. This organization is built on community. The coaches are the real deal. Tough when they need to be, encouraging always and genuinely invested in every kid. The parents are welcoming, the kids are supportive and the friendships my son has made here are ones I think he'll carry for life. This program delivers way beyond the court.

Our family has loved being part of Westside United. Cameron joined when there were just enough boys to put together one combined 5/6th team, so it's been amazing to watch the club grow into the thriving program it is today! One thing has never changed though —the welcoming community the coaches have built that makes every player and family feel like they belong. From team practices to skills sessions and extra training opportunities, it’s obvious the coaches truly care about each player’s growth.
They’ve done a great job of helping Cameron build his skills, basketball IQ, and confidence in an environment where hard work is encouraged, every player is supported, and the game of basketball is truly fun. Westside United has become so much more than a basketball club—it’s a community we’re grateful to be part of.

Westside Basketball was much more than a place to play—it became a second home. The coaches believed in me, challenged me, and taught me that success isn’t just about talent. It’s about discipline, consistency, accountability, and showing up every day ready to work.
One of the biggest lessons I learned through Westside was that growth comes from embracing adversity. Whether it was a tough practice, a difficult loss, or competing for playing time, I learned to stay resilient and trust the process. Those lessons have carried over into every part of my life, from my career to my personal goals. I approach challenges with the same mindset I developed on the court: work hard, stay humble, and keep improving.
The relationships I built with my coaches and teammates are something I’ll always value. Westside helped shape not only the player I became but also the person I am today. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been part of a program that emphasized character just as much as basketball.
I’ll always be proud to call myself a Westside alumni, and I’m thankful for everything the program gave me both on and off the court.
Westside United means everything to me. I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today. I was grateful for the opportunity to play on the team, travel, compete, and learn the game of basketball. But what made Westside special went far beyond basketball.
Looking back more than 10 years later, it was the relationships I built there that meant the most to me.
Coach Brian taught me toughness and helped me understand the game on a deeper level. But he also taught me something he probably never realized would change my life. He was editing highlight tapes for everyone, and as a young kid, I was impatient—I always wanted my clips as fast as possible. So he showed me how to edit them myself.
Who would’ve thought those first edits would turn into a career?
That small lesson led me to learn editing, producing, picking up a camera, and ultimately travel the world and do something I love to do!
The craziest part is how life came full circle. I found myself sitting at my computer editing a video of the No. 1 draft pick going undercover as a referee… officiating a game featuring my old AAU team.
Moments like that remind me that none of this happened by accident. It all started at Westside, and I’ll always be grateful for everything they gave me on and off the court.

Ethan Feldman is an Assistant Coach at NYU Mens Basketball. Ethan played for Coach Barham for multiple years on the original Westside United team in NYC.
Playing for Westside United was the most fun I ever had playing basketball. I started on the inaugural season of Coach Barham’s squad and there were a lot of ups and downs between finding the right players and right coaches. I also had a lot of personal growth not just as a knucklehead kid but also having to look myself in the face very hard about what I needed to bring differently to help the team as whole. I went from being a leading scorer on my high school team and as we got better, Coach Barham sat me down and told me that I would no longer be starting and if I wanted more minutes I would have to focus on being a defense and energy guy. That was not something I took well, especially because we weren’t even winning that many games. After some time and looking around at the best team chemistry I’ve ever experienced (to this day) I made serious adjustments to my game and not only won my starting job back but LOVED my new game. It’s the game I still play now going into my 30th year of life. I’ll never forget once I learned my role and others learned there’s, our last season of Westside United NY we finished 13-1 and playing the best and most fun brand of ball I’ve ever experienced. There is no greater feeling that being a piece to the greater good of a team and knowing your role. That helped me a lot with basketball, relationships, work and all of the hard lessons I learned in my most formidable years as a high school boy, made me the man I am today. Coach Barham and his staff, my teammates and the incredible positive energy Westside United created, are some of the best years I’ve ever had in my entire life. I would do anything to go back in time to experience that again. All those years winning and (lots) of losing together created memories I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
When I think about my years playing organized sports, Westside United is undoubtedly the highlight. Brian and the organization understood deeply how to make us feel connected to each other as teammates. They took the time to learn what made each of us tick, using our tendencies to push us toward unlocking our best selves. They built an environment that allowed us to feel aligned with each other despite our differing circumstances. And playing for them taught me fundamental lessons that have shaped me significantly. Westside Basketball helped me understand what it means to sacrifice for a mission greater than yourself. They taught me how to lose with grace, and win with humility. They showed me how to push myself to my limits and learn what I’m capable of. And they introduced me to lifelong friends who I’ll forever be bonded to because of all the work we put in together. Brian was thoroughly invested in us. In our physical health, our emotional and mental well being, and obviously our progression as basketball players. He invited us into his home, introduced us to his family, and supported us in many of our endeavors unrelated to basketball. In my opinion, Westside should be the premier model for how to help shape young athletes into productive adults, and I’ll forever be grateful for how much attention and time Brian and his staff poured into me and my teammates. “Hit the single,” was one of his favorite phrases. In context, he meant don’t force any risky passes on the court. But in general, it’s become a mantra of sorts for my life, and a reminder to always trust the process, stay patient, and seize the opportunity once it’s presented.
